This information has been compiled to help you understand and cope with the symptoms arising from the withdrawal of steroids (Prednisone or Decadron)
The Adrenal glands located above kidneys secretes an important hormone called cortisone. This hormone is also used as a medicine under the name of Prednisone, Decadron etc. While this is a very useful medicine, its long term use is associated with side effects if the medicine is stopped abruptly. If this medicine is taken for more than 3 weeks, it may suppress natural production of cortisone form the adrenal glands. Once the medicine is stopped, it takes the adrenal gland several days and some times weeks to resume its normal production of cortisone. During this period you may experience the following :
Excessive tiredness | |
Body aches | |
Pains in the joints | |
Abdominal pains, nausea and vomiting. |
If these symptoms become disabling. you should take one Prednisone. If these symptoms are still present by the next day then you should call our office for further assistance.
Caution: If you have been on Prednisone or other oral steroids for more than 6 months then for the next six months during the stress, you will need to take Prednisone again. Please alert your doctor of this need.
